OKCPS Unveiled New STEAM Lab at F.D. Moon Academy

On Monday, August 27, F.D. Moon Academy had a special celebration as Principal Aaron Kellert unveiled the school's new STEAM lab to students, teachers, staff and the public. The lab displayed colorful house-shaped pods for students and manipulatives worth $8,000 to learn areas of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).


The project began coming to live in August of 2017, when Aaron Kellert-then newly named Principal at F.D. Moon Academy-saw an opportunity to convert a large storage closet into a hands-on learning space. The room, which was then being used as a storage by school teachers and members of a local church, had hundreds of discarded books, clutter, pieces of computer equipment, and house-shaped pods in it. Little by little, Principal Kellert cleaned the room and reorganized the space to make it into a STEAM lab with functioning computers, new lights, and electrical wiring for the IT equipment. The lab has now four colorful house-shaped structures, each of which offers numerous learning materials valued at $8,000-which were obtained through Title I funds. 


"For me, it is about exploring and problem-solving," said Aaron Kellert, Principal at F.D. Moon Academy. "That's what I originally had in my mind when I was developing the lab. This learning area is a chance for kids to create and discover all kinds of hands-on materials that challenge students with complex thinking and stepping outside of the box. I hope to create a place that engages students and encourages them to try something new."

"What used to be a dusty storage room is now a place where students will be able to experiment and learn in fun, interactive ways," said Dr. Sean McDaniel, OKCPS Superintendent. "This is a great space for them to learn in, but I also hope they'll be inspired by the creativity and resourcefulness that Principal Kellert and his team have shown."

The school plans to continue using the lab throughout the school year as both a learning space that teachers can book to use and as an incentive to reward remarkable students and classes with fun learning time in the STEAM lab.

 

 

OKCPS  REVELA NUEVO LABORATORIO DE STEAM DE LA ESCUELA PRIMARIA FD MOON VALORADO EN MÁS DE $8,000
 
El lunes 27 de agosto, la escuela primaria FD Moon Academy tuvo una celebración especial cuando el director Aaron Kellert presentó el nuevo laboratorio STEAM de la escuela a los estudiantes, maestros, personal y al público. El laboratorio exhibió estructuras coloridas con forma de casas que alojan objetos manipulables con un valor de $ 8,000 para aprender sobre áreas de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería, arte y matemáticas (STEAM).
El proyecto comenzó a tomar forma en agosto de 2017, cuando Aaron Kellert -entonces recién nombrado director de FD Moon Academy- vio la oportunidad de convertir un gran salón de almacenamiento en un espacio de aprendizaje práctico. La sala, que anteriormente era utilizada como almacén por maestros de la escuela y miembros de una iglesia local, tenía cientos de libros desechados, desorden, piezas de equipos de computación y estructuras con forma de casa. Poco a poco, el director Kellert limpió la sala y reorganizó el espacio para convertirlo en un laboratorio STEAM con computadoras en funcionamiento, nuevas luces y cableado eléctrico para el equipo de informática y tecnología. El laboratorio tiene ahora cuatro estructuras coloridas con forma de casa, cada una de las cuales ofrece numerosos materiales de aprendizaje valorados en $ 8,000, que se obtuvieron a través de fondos de Título I.

"Para mí, se trata de explorar y resolver problemas," dijo Aaron Kellert, Director de la escuela FD Moon Academy. "Eso es lo que originalmente tenía en mente cuando estaba desarrollando el laboratorio. Esta área de aprendizaje es una oportunidad para que los niños creen y descubran todo tipo de materiales prácticos que desafíen a los estudiantes con pensamientos complejos y creativos. Espero crear un lugar que involucre a los estudiantes y los aliente a probar algo nuevo."
 
"Lo que solía ser un almacén polvoriento ahora es un lugar donde los estudiantes podrán experimentar y aprender de manera divertida e interactiva", dijo el Dr. Sean McDaniel, superintendente de OKCPS. "Este es un gran espacio para que los estudiantes aprendan, pero también espero que estén inspirados por la creatividad y el ingenio que el director Kellert y su equipo han demostrado".

La escuela planea continuar usando el laboratorio durante el año escolar como un espacio de aprendizaje que los maestros pueden reservar para usar y como un incentivo para recompensar a los estudiantes y clases notables con un divertido momento de aprendizaje en el laboratorio STEAM.
