January 28, 2025 | Update #2 on OSDE’s Proposed Administrative Rules re: Proof of Citizenship

  • Dear OKCPS Families,

Recent changes in federal policies and proposed state rules have raised questions and concerns for many families in our community. During times like these, I want to reassure you that Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) remains steadfast in our commitment to working collaboratively with families and community partners to ensure that all students are safe, supported, and valued.

As we have always maintained, every child has the right to a quality public education. This right is protected under federal law, and OKCPS will continue to uphold it while adhering to state and federal regulations.

We know that navigating these complex issues can be challenging, but please remember that you are not alone. OKCPS is here to support our students, families and community. As we move forward together, here are some important points to keep in mind:

    • OKCPS does not collect or share immigration-related information about our students or their families.

    • The Immigration-related rules proposed by the Oklahoma State Department of Education are not yet finalized or approved by the legislature.

    • Strong protocols are in place at our schools to protect the safety and privacy of students and families when interacting with law enforcement or government officials.

    • Discrimination, harassment, or bullying of any kind—especially for reasons related to immigration status or national origin—is not tolerated at OKCPS.

    • OKCPS will always prioritize the safety, privacy, and dignity of our students and families.

    What Can Families Do?

Here are some steps you can take to help us better support your student(s):

    • Keep Emergency Contacts Updated: Ensure your school has up-to-date emergency contacts. Families can provide names and phone numbers of someone to contact if a parent or guardian cannot be reached—no address is required. You can update this information by calling your student’s school.

    • Stay Connected with Your School: If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s school.

    • Reach Out to Community Resources: Families and staff are encouraged to connect with local organizations for additional support and resources. Here are a few community resources:

As your superintendent, I remain committed to focusing on the well-being of our students, supporting our principals, and protecting our teachers as we navigate these challenges together. It’s important that we continue to lean on one another and move forward as one OKCPS family—because we are better when we do it together.

    Take Care,
