OKCPS Encourages Family Support for Student Success During State Testing

As students in Oklahoma prepare to take the Oklahoma School Testing Program (OSTP) assessments this month, OKCPS emphasizes the importance of family involvement in ensuring student readiness and success. The OSTP assessments evaluate students' proficiency in core academic subjects including reading, math, science and social studies. Students in grades 3-8 take the OSTP test, while 11th graders take College and Career Readiness Assessments (CCRA).

"We believe that the partnership between families and our school is crucial in helping our students achieve their full potential," said Dr. Sean McDaniel, OKCPS Superintendent. "As we enter the OSTP testing period, we encourage families to actively engage in their child's education and provide support to ensure their readiness for these assessments."

Key tips for families to support their students during the testing period include:

  • Prioritize Rest: Ensure your student gets a good night's sleep before test days to enhance focus and concentration.

  • Stay Organized: Help your child prepare for test days by organizing materials and establishing morning routines to minimize stress.

  • Eat Breakfast: Encourage your child to eat a nutritious breakfast to fuel their body and mind for optimal performance during the assessments. OKCPS schools offer free breakfast for all students, so make sure your student arrives at school in plenty of time so they can take advantage of that.

  • Boost Confidence: Reinforce your student's confidence and readiness for the tests, emphasizing that they have the skills and abilities to succeed.

  • Know the Schedule: Stay informed about testing dates and any schedule adjustments, and avoid scheduling appointments on testing days. If you're unsure about the schedule, ask the school or your student’s teacher.

In addition to preparing for the OSTP assessments, OKCPS would like to remind families that enrollment for the 2024-25 school year is now open. Families interested in providing their children with a supportive and enriching learning environment are encouraged to enroll online or at their neighborhood school.
