Message from McDaniel - The New Back to School Plan

  • OKCPS Families, Staff and Community,

Last night, district leaders presented our updated 2020-21 Back to School Plan to the OKCPS Board of Education. As you might imagine, this has been quite an undertaking over the last few months, and we have relied on five important guiding principles throughout the planning process: Health and Safety, Learning, Social and Emotional Needs, Equity and Flexible Learning Models. Right now, we are leaning heavily on “flexibility”!

Our teams are still working through the details, but here are a few things our families and staff need to know as a result of last night’s Board meeting:

    • First day of school has changed from August 10th to August 31st
      • Updated school calendar is available here
      • Updated calendars for OKCPS staff are coming soon.
    • Day One Learning: We will start the school year virtually due to the current status of the pandemic in our community. OKCPS families can choose from two online learning options:
      • Option One: Traditional Learning -- Contingency Plan
        • This option is teacher-driven and provides ongoing interaction between teacher and students in a small group online classroom setting using our learning management system coupled with assessments developed by OKCPS teachers.
        • This option will be reevaluated half way through the first 9 weeks of school to determine if continuing virtually is the best option for students or if we can safely transition into some type of in-person learning.
      • Option Two: e3 Online Learning
        • This fully online option allows students to work at their own pace, using the online learning platform called Florida Virtual (K-5) and Edgenuity (6-12). Pre-K curriculum will be created by a district team and provided through SeeSaw platform. Students will have access to a teacher as a mentor, but this will primarily be self-led learning. This option also requires a 9 weeks commitment for Pre-K - 5th grade and a semester long commitment for 6th - 12th grade students.
    • All students will be provided with a mobile device as part of either option. Students in grades PK-2 will receive an iPad and students in grades 3rd-12th will receive a Chromebook. If at-home connectivity is a challenge for our families, OKCPS is prepared to provide hotspots. Family and student orientation will be provided on how to use the device and hotspot.
    • Summer Meal Service ends Friday, July 24, but meal service will resume no later than August 10th in a drive-thru and curbside format for the fall. OKCPS will keep our families updated with meal service details.
    • OKCPS previously postponed our in-person enrollment by one week. However, given these new changes, we are putting it on hold for now to allow more time to plan for remote learning. Stay tuned for a new date. In the meantime, all families are encouraged to enroll online if possible. Learn more at www.okcps.org/BacktoSchool or contact our registration hotline at 587-0435 for help to enroll online.

District leaders are working diligently to develop the details of our new Back to School Plan for 2020-2021 while closely monitoring guidance from our public health partners. We are also anxiously awaiting the outcome of tomorrow’s Oklahoma State Department of Education Board Meeting which will likely influence some of our decision making and the further development of our plans.

I realize this is a lot to digest during an already challenging time, but we ask that everyone please be patient as we continue to finalize the many facets of our new plan. One thing that will never change is our focus on the health, wellness and safety of our students and their families, our staff and our community. You are always our top priority and every decision is made with your best interest in mind.

Thank you for your continued support of OKCPS. More from us very soon!
