Guidance for Families Traveling During Spring Break

  • OKCPS continues to closely follow the global spread of COVID-19 and its potential impact on our schools and community. We must be especially vigilant in determining when anyone in our schools has become potentially exposed to the virus and take responsible actions to contain and prevent its spread.

We know that families travel regularly and may have plans to travel over Spring Break (March 16-20). With the well-being of our entire community on our minds, if you will be traveling internationally, please be aware of where you are in relation to COVID-19 hotspots. Conditions change daily and could have a significant impact on your ability to return to the U.S. and to our schools.

If you plan to travel to any country that the CDC has designated as a Level 2 or Level 3, you must let us know by filling out this simple form. This will help us comply with requests from health officials and aid in the prevention of the spread of this illness. Currently, China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, and Japan are on the list of countries at a Level 2 or Level 3. Please check the CDC Travel Advisory website for additional countries that may be added. For all other international travel, we ask that you be careful and watch for signs of the virus. The Oklahoma State Department of Health has established a Coronavirus Call Center which can be reached by calling (877)215-8336.

Additionally, if you return from a country, region, or state that the CDC has designated a Level 2 or Level 3 before or during your stay there, you must self-quarantine for 14 days upon your return. After the 14-day period, if your child is symptom free, they may return to school. Our faculty will work remotely with your children to help them remain current in their studies during such time. We recognize that attendance is very important, and we will work with individual families as needed on how to handle these excused absences, exemptions, etc.

Providing a safe and healthy learning environment is a top priority, and we thank you for partnering with us during this situation. OKCPS will provide updates as needed and when necessary. All information is available on the district website at www.okcps.org/covid-19.

Spring Break Travel Guidance from OKSDE

  • Dear District and School Leaders:

The Oklahoma State Department of Health and the Oklahoma State Department of Education are partnering to provide specific guidance regarding Spring Break and other travels for our school families, students and district staff.

Individuals returning from travel to China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, Japan or any other Level 2 or 3 country as identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should self-quarantine for a period of 14 days before returning to school. This applies to all students, teachers, and other school or district staff.

Steps for returning travelers from Level 2 or 3 countries:
    1. Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever. Also watch for cough or trouble breathing.
    2. Stay home and avoid contact with others. Do not go to work or school for this 14-day period. Discuss your work situation with your district before returning to work or school.
    3. Do not take public transportation, taxis, or ride-shares during the time you are practicing social distancing.
    4. Avoid crowded places (such as shopping centers and movie theaters) and limit your activities in public.
    5. Keep your distance from others (about 6 feet).
Please refer frequently to the CDC Travelers Guidance as other countries may be elevated to Level 2 or 3 at any time.

    Sick Leave:
District employees may use any available sick leave during a required 14-day self-quarantine.

Thank you for your careful attention to student and staff safety. We will provide additional guidance in the coming days.

    Sincerely,
    Joy Hofmeister
    State Superintendent of Public Instruction
