James Buchanan was born at Stony Batter, Pennsylvania on April 23, 1791. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1809 and was admitted to the bar in 1812. A successful political and diplomatic career followed and included terms as congressman, senator, Secretary of State and Minister to Russia and to Great Britain. He made unsuccessful bids for the presidential nomination in 1848 and again in 1852, but finally was elected President of the United States in 1856. Buchanan was a bachelor, and his niece acted as White House hostess during his term of office.
