OKCPS Families, Staff and Community,
Last night, the Board of Education took action to adopt the resolution below, which serves to officially approve the OKCPS Board's revised Election District Maps.
Please note: these changes only affect the boundaries that make up the areas represented by each board member. These changes do not impact the attendance boundaries for any school. The only possible impact to families would be a different board member representing the area where you live.
Redistricting Resolution
Whereas, school districts that are currently divided into board districts for purposes of election are mandated by 70 O.S. § 5-107A to reapportion the territory of the school district into board districts in the year following the submission by the United States Department of Commerce to the President of the United States of the official Federal Decennial Census; and,
Whereas, board districts shall be compact, contiguous, and shall be as equal in population as practical with not more than a ten percent (10%) variance between the most populous and least populous board districts; and,
Whereas, the board of education has carefully reviewed and considered maps of the school district’s population in an effort to adhere to the statutory requirements.
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Board of Education of Independent School District No. 89 of Oklahoma, County, Oklahoma, (Oklahoma City Public Schools) has adopted the attached map of board districts for school board elections which shall be utilized until such time as the district is required to be reapportioned.
Background of Decennial Redistricting
Every 10 years (after the federal census), federal, state, and local representative boundaries are reviewed and often redrawn to reflect new population data and shifting populations. This includes the school board seat boundaries in our district. The Planning, Research and Evaluation (PRE) team has been working with RSP & Associates to evaluate the latest Census data in comparison to our school board member seat boundaries.
The new boundaries must meet criteria outlined in state law.

All boundaries of board districts shall follow clearly visible, definable and observable physical boundaries.

Boundaries should be based on criteria established and recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau, such as streets, railroad tracks and, when possible, precinct boundaries

Boundaries shall be compact, contiguous and as equal in population as practical with not more than a ten percent (10%) variance between the most populous and least populous board districts

The board must vote on any changes to districts by the end of the calendar year, December 31st
