School Named for: Horace Mann, Educator

    What's In a Name

Horace Mann was born near Franklin, Massachusetts on May 4, 1796. His father died when Mann was only 13. By the age of 16, he had spent only a few weeks in bad schools. Determined to get to college, Mann worked hard for six months with an itinerant teacher. He entered Brown University and graduated in 1819 with highest honors.

After graduation, he attended law school and served as a Massachusetts state legislator. When he was elected to the Massachusetts Senate, Mann devoted himself to passing a solid education bill.

Because of his efforts, he became the Secretary of the State Board of Education. From this position, his efforts on behalf of free public schools influenced education throughout the nation. He became a U. S. Congressman in 1848 and President of Antioch College in 1852. Horace Mann became known as “The Father of American Education.”
