    What's In a Name
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. His father and grandfather were strong civil rights leaders, and King continued in their footsteps. He was admitted to Morehouse College when he was only 15 and later received a Ph.D. in theology from Boston University. He married Coretta Scott in 1953.

With his skills as an orator and strategist, King led “non-violent crusades against the evils of second-class citizenship.” By the end of the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955, he had gained international fame and he used his influence to campaign against segregation in all public services, including schools. He was one of the principals in the 1963 March on Washington, where he made his famous “I Have a Dream” speech before a crowd of 250,000 people demonstrating on behalf of the Civil Rights Bill.
