April 27, 2022 | Message from McDaniel: OKCPS Bond Planning

OKCPS Families & Staff,

As the end of our 2021-2022 school year approaches, I want to set our sights on the next big opportunity for OKCPS kids…the 2022 School Bond Program

It’s been nearly 6 years since our community came together and voted to invest in Oklahoma City Public Schools through a school bond election. School bonds help our district pay for things like district building repairs, new buses, new technology, and new textbooks; and, we believe the dollars generated from this new school bond will enable us to take our district to the next level by creating truly transformational learning opportunities for our kids.

With the average age of OKCPS schools at 72 years old - and with 9 schools over 100 years old - it is more important than ever that we invest not only in renovating our existing district facilities but that we also make plans for new construction. By doing this, OKCPS will finally be able to give our students access to the same innovative educational opportunities and modern learning spaces that kids in nearby districts already enjoy.

How can you help?

OKCPS is committed to gathering input from a variety of stakeholders as we finalize the pieces of our bond program. For the past year, my team and I have been talking with small groups of students and teachers, with our principals and district leaders, and with a select group of community members regarding our next bond initiative. The Board of Education and I have also had ongoing discussions since September 2021, and today we’re excited to broaden the conversation so we can hear directly from you -- our students, families, staff and community!

Community Meetings

OKCPS will host two Community Meetings next week to share information with you about our upcoming bond. These sessions will begin at 5:45pm and Spanish interpretation will be available. We hope you’ll join us!

  • May 2 at Southeast High School, 5401 S Shields Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73129
  • May 3 at Douglass High School, 900 N Martin Luther King Ave, OKC, 73117

Survey

We’re also launching a short bond survey which will be open until midnight on Sunday, May 15. It will be available in English and Spanish, and we hope everyone will take a moment to share your thoughts with us.

Your feedback will be critical as we finalize the pieces of our bond package. We anticipate bringing the proposal to our Board for consideration this summer as we target a November 8th election.

OKCPS will continue to share updates along the way, and you can also visit our website at www.okcps.org/Bond22 to monitor the progress.

This is an exciting time for OKCPS and we look forward to hearing from you as we continue to invest in the future of Oklahoma City kids!
