3/25/2020: Schools Remain Closed
3/25/2020
OKCPS Family,
Today, the state Board of Education voted that Oklahoma students should not return to the classroom for the remainder of the current school year, as our state continues to fight the spread of COVID-19. Instead, the state Board has recommended that districts provide a continuous learning plan that will allow students to complete the school year at home.
This means that our school buildings will not reopen, and there will be no traditional, in-person instruction, extracurricular activities or events. Instead, OKCPS teachers and students will stay at home and we will move to distance learning for the remainder of this year.
OKCPS is working diligently to finalize our Continuous Learning Program, which will launch on Monday, April 6th. As you might imagine, there are still many details for us to work out, but we look forward to reconnecting our students with their teachers through a combination of both online and printed instructional materials. Learning will continue!
While we finalize the OKCPS plan over the next several days, we hope our families will continue to take advantage of the free meals for students at 42 sites around the district, including elementary school campuses and several city parks. Just yesterday, we served more than 14,000 meals! Grab-&-Go breakfast and lunches are available to any child 0-18 years of age from Monday - Friday. (Applications, ID, and proof of income are not required.) Click here for a list of feeding locations and times.
We also encourage our students and families to take advantage of the instructional resources that are already available on our website. These resources are optional and can be done at home.
What we are experiencing together is hard, and I know each of you must have a thousand questions. The truth is, I don’t have all the answers for you today, but I promise that our teams are working hard to find them. We just need a few more days to hammer out the details. Thank you so much for support and for the grace you have extended to us as a district during these unprecedented times. Please know that it hasn’t gone unnoticed. The OKCPS Board of Education will meet on Friday, March 27, to provide additional guidance, and I will share more information with you on next steps for OKCPS as soon as possible.
We all are in this together.
Familias OKCPS:
