July 29, 2021 | OKCPS Adds Asynchronous Learning Days to 2021-22 Calendar

July 29, 2021

OKCPS Families  -

As you may know, OKCPS was able to provide every student with a device last school year. Returning students will continue to use the device they were issued last year and our new students will be issued a device in the first few weeks of the new school year.

Access to technology for our students allows OKCPS to transform the way we teach and do business. Not only can we quickly transition to remote learning in the event of a school closure or inclement weather, but it creates an opportunity for OKCPS to invest in professional development for our teachers in a way that was simply not possible before.

OKCPS has built in seven (7) asynchronous remote learning days as part of our 2021-22 School Calendar. On these days, our teachers will load assignments into Canvas and all students will log-in to learn on their own at home.

Adding these days to our calendar will allow our teachers to participate in needed and required Professional Development, extra time to plan standards-based lessons, review student assessment data and create more effective and individualized instruction.

In addition to providing time for our teachers to focus on the things that will ultimately make them more impactful in the classroom, learning from home will allow our students to continue to sharpen their asynchronous independent learning skills, as well as their oral and written communication. Because remote learning caters to individualized needs of students, our middle and high school students may be working on their Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAP) activities while our younger learners focus on things like skill building or practice of skills at home.

While we know there are important benefits to remote learning, we do realize that asynchronous learning days will have an impact on your family. So, we wanted to give you as much time as possible to make any necessary arrangements for your student to learn from home on these dates:

  • September 20, 2021
  • November 8, 2021
  • December 6, 2021
  • January 31, 2022
  • February 21, 2022
  • March 21, 2022
  • April 4, 2022

Curb-side meals will be served at all school sites and available to all students at no cost on  asynchronous remote learning days.

As a reminder, all OKCPS students will be issued a mobile learning device for the upcoming year, and the district can even help with access to the internet if needed. We don’t want our families to have any barriers to learning. Please note that learning devices will be distributed to those who still need them at your child’s school once classes begin on August 9th.

Thank you in advance for your support as we celebrate this opportunity to leverage technology in new and exciting ways. It’s going to be a great year at OKCPS!
