Help Your Student Prepare for Testing
It’s Testing Season!
In April and May, students across the state will sit down to take the Oklahoma School Testing Program (OSTP) assessment. The purpose of this comprehensive test is to show the growth and achievement in core academic areas, like reading, math, science and social studies. As your student’s first teacher, it’s important for family members to be involved in their student’s education.
Here are a few ways to help your student(s) be prepared.
Rest! A good night’s rest will improve your student’s ability to focus and be fully charged on test days. Consider enforcing special test-week rules, like earlier bedtimes and no phone, games or other electronics an hour before bed.
Get Organized! Test days are stressful enough without having to scramble in the morning. You can help reduce stress by packing backpacks or laying out clothes the night before. Leave for school with plenty of time to spare, so your student(s) can focus on doing their best—not rushing to school.
Fuel Up! Whether at home or school, encourage your student(s) to eat breakfast. Our brains don’t work as well when our tummies are empty.
They Are Ready! In addition to a good night's sleep, being organized and having a full tummy, let them know that they are ready! Emphasize to your student(s) that they will be given as much time as needed to complete each test and that they are not timed. Encourage them to try and do their best.
Lastly, add testing dates to your calendar. Try to schedule any appointments on non-testing days, and if needed, contact your student’s school so you know when your student is testing.
You’ve heard the phrase, “it takes a village”, and with your help, alongside your child’s teachers, our students will SUCCEED!
