Update for Incoming Pre-K Families
Beginning in July 2020, OKCPS will repurpose the former Gatewood Elementary building (1821 NW 21st St, OKC) as the OKCPS Early Childhood Center at Gatewood.
This centrally located building will house our Early Childhood team which consists of 16 staff members, including our Parents As Teachers and Early Birds team members, who serve families with young children (Birth to 5 years) across the district.
This building will also house four Pre-K classes for Cleveland Elementary. Three of those classes were previously located at the Linwood Early Learning Center. OKCPS works to serve all age-eligible children in Pre-K, because an early education experience is an important part of the culture of being an OKCPS student. We believe it is important that we continue to serve our students at this level, and by moving the Pre-K students from Linwood Early Learning Center to Gatewood, these Pre-K’ers will get to experience even more of the P2G trade-ups, like having a library on-site.
But it is not just our students that will benefit. Currently, a number of our local colleges/universities have closed their Lab Schools which provide a place for prospective educators to have hands-on training to apply what they have learned in their classroom setting. Although OKCPS already serves a number of these education students in our childcare sites at Emerson North and US Grant High School, we believe that by repurposing Gatewood to expand our Pre-K programming, OKCPS can further support prospective educators here in the metro area, whether they are seeking a position in a childcare setting or as a public school teacher. We are also excited for the opportunity to recruit those teachers to begin their professional career in our district after spending time with us at the OKCPS Early Childhood Center at Gatewood.
OKCPS hopes to host Pre-K enrollment during the first week of May. We will share the details for pre-k enrollment as soon as we can, so please stay tuned!
Although there will be some cost involved, we consider this investment in the OKCPS Early Childhood Center at Gatewood to be part of our district’s broader strategic plan. This building is an excellent setting for Pre-K classrooms, and our teachers, along with the education students who visit, will benefit from the extra support of having the Early Childhood team on site. We look forward to welcoming students in August as OKCPS continues to move forward on our Pathway to Greatness.
