OKCPS Board Member and Alumna Carole Thompson Named to Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame

Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) proudly celebrates District 1 Board of Education Member the Honorable Carole Thompson on her selection as a 2026 inductee into the Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame.

An OKCPS alumna and graduate of Northwest Classen High School, Ms. Thompson is a lifelong champion for public education. Before joining the Board of Education, she served as principal of John Marshall Enterprise High School, while opening Oklahoma Centennial Mid-High School, where she dedicated her career to empowering students, supporting educators and strengthening school communities.

The distinguished honor recognizes educators and education leaders whose service, leadership and lasting contributions have made a meaningful impact on students, schools and communities across Oklahoma. The Hall of Fame celebrates and preserves the rich legacy of African American educators who have helped shape public education throughout the state.

As the District 1 representative on the OKCPS Board of Education, Ms. Thompson continues to advocate for student success and educational excellence across the district. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to serving students, families and the Oklahoma City community.

“Carole Thompson’s selection for the Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame is a powerful tribute to a life shaped by education and devoted to serving others,” said OKCPS Superintendent Dr. Jamie Polk. “As a proud OKCPS alumna, science educator, principal, mentor and Board member, Ms. Thompson reflects the highest ideals of service, leadership and lifelong learning. Her legacy lives through the generations of students and educators she has inspired to believe in themselves, lead with purpose and never stop learning. We admire her deeply and are proud to celebrate this well-deserved honor.” 

As part of the induction process, Ms. Thompson will participate in an interview at the Oklahoma History Center, where inductees will share their educational journeys and the lasting impact of their work. The interviews help preserve the stories and legacies of Oklahoma's distinguished African American educators for future generations. The induction ceremony will take place on October 9.
