About ReadOKC On The Go!
ReadOKC On the Go! is an initiative of ReadOKC under the direction of the OKCPS Compact and managed by The Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools. With the mission to “Instill the love of reading in our students and community”, ReadOKC has been given a unique opportunity to make a dramatic impact on literacy in our community.
OKCPS has provided two ADA compliant school buses for ReadOKC to convert to book mobiles. ReadOKC coordinated the retrofitting of the buses, stocking the bus with books, and scheduling and training volunteers for the bus visits. The purpose of ReadOKC On the Go! is to improve access to reading materials and will operate similar to a Little Library where students pick out a book and take it home to read and expand their home libraries. The books on the bus have been selected under the direction of OKCPS academic leaders. Based on current design, each bus will carry approximately 3,000 books for students of all ages!
ReadOKC On the Go! will visit each school at least once during the school year. Other locations for the bus to visit may include but not be limited to events with the Boys and Girls Club, Blue Cross Caring Van, Regional Food Bank, DHS, OKC Parks and Recreation and various parades and community events. The goal for the first year is to place 10,000 books in the community.
