Network Palm Switch Policies and Standards
Enhancing the Education of our Students

Purpose

This policy establishes the temporary policy to follow for the use of palm switches on the District network.

Limitations

  • Palm switches will be limited to one per network drop. (No cascading). Palm switches will be Linksys EtherFast® 8-Port 10/100 Switch current part no. EZXS88W.
  • Once OCMAPS, the E-rate program, or other funding sources have upgraded the infrastructure at a school these devices will no longer be allowed on the network.

Responsibilities

The site requesting the palm switch will be responsible for the replacement of this equipment in the event of a failure. The site will also be responsible for making sure that any cabling attached to these devices is out of the walk path of students and staff and does not constitute a safety hazard. Patch cables connected to the palm switch must not exceed ten feet in length. Network Services troubleshoots and maintains existing CAT5/CAT6 network cabling up to the wall plates/outlets in each room. Network Services does not assume any responsibility for trouble shooting, maintenance, or replacement of palm switch equipment. Network Services reserves the right to disconnect any device which causes harm or disruption of service to the District network. It should also be noted that the Voice over IP (VOIP) phones will not work with these devices.
