What's In a Name:

Dwight David Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas on October 14, 1890. He graduated from West Point in 1916 and married Mamie Geneva Doud in 1915. He continued his career in the military and in 1941, early in World War II, he was made a brigadier-general.

In 1942, he was the Allied Commander in Chief for the invasion of North Africa. The next year he was made a full general and Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force. His successful orchestration of the invasion of Europe on D-Day led to an appointment as Army Chief of Staff after the war.

Upon retirement from the military in 1948, Eisenhower was named president of Columbia University. He was elected as President of the United States in 1952; he was reelected in 1956.

Despite his military background, Eisenhower did not believe that issuing orders and enforcing obedience was effective leadership. He tried to inspire others to cooperate and to use their own talents to the fullest. However, Eisenhower’s brilliant successes as a general did not seem to translate to his presidency. He died on March 28, 1969.
