School Named for: Walter J. and Frances Edwards

 

What's In a Name:

Walter J. and Frances Edwards were African American land developers. In 1936, they bought 32 acres in the northeastern section of Oklahoma City. There they built more than 800 homes. In 1938, they founded the elementary school and donated the first building. In 1948, they constructed Edwards Memorial Hospital, a 105 bed facility. It is said to have been the only hospital in the South owned and operated by African Americans.
