Partnership Gift... Arthur Elementary teachers
happily wave their Mardel gift cards graciously donated by the McLaughlin
Foundation at the beginning of this year. The faculty and staff at Arthur
Elementary feel lucky to be adopted by the McLaughlin family for the second
year in a row. The McLaughlin family will be sponsoring several programs and
activities this upcoming year including a program to encourage all students
to become ‘math masters.’ In this exciting and challenging program, children
who earn the title ‘Math Master’ will receive their very own Math Master
t-shirts.
August 28, 2006 World Travelers... Educators Rita Gray-Martin,
Parker Elementary, and Ann Kennedy, Southeast High School, along with two
other Oklahoma educators were selected to participate in an economic
education study tour to Kiev, Ukraine this November.
Looking Good... Parker Elementary is proud of their "styling" students who showed up for school in their uniforms. They have 100 percent participation in their school uniform policy and they are very proud.
August 22, 2006 Just Kicking It... The Capitol Hill High School Men’s Soccer Team had a 2006 Season record of 16-2. They Achieved Many Championships along the way to the State Championship Game! They are the:
Many of the players achieved individual awards. Three soccer players, Alberto Espinoza, Victor Martinez and Gerardo Preciado, received All-State recognition. Making All-Distict were Alberto Espinoza, Jose Gonzales, Victor Martinez, Jaime Perez, Gerardo Preciado and Miguel Ramos. The CHHS All-City players were Jaime Perez, 1st team; Alberto Espinoza, 2nd Team; and Francisco Sigala, 2nd Team. Congratulations guys - you did great!
The Right Avenue... Dr. Walter Mullican, Portland Avenue Church pastor, and Gina McKean, the Children's Ministry coordinator, have been working with Buchanan Elementary to develop a community partnership that will benefit the students. Through the generosity of Portland Avenue Church every student at Buchanan Elementary was provided with backpacks filled with homework supplies such as paper, scissors, rulers, crayons, pencils and markers. Portland Avenue Church has also started a Kleenex ministry and will provide Buchanan with Kleenex throughout the school year.
August 16, 2006 Over the Horizon... Students in the Life Skills class at Jackson Middle School were featured in a segment of "Oklahoma Horizons" which aired on OETA June 11,2006.The episode dealt with how teens deal with pressure from media regarding suggestive advertising and ways to prevent becoming a teenage pregnancy statistic. Also featured were peer educators from Southeast High School.
July 30, 2006 100 Percent Good... Evan Crabtree and Shaelynn Morefield, students at Classen School of Advanced Studies, were chosen to be members of the Oklahoma All Star Centennial Band. During Oklahoma's Centennial Celebration, the band will perform at many events and will also represent Oklahoma in the 2007 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. More than 400 students from across the state auditioned in April to be selected as one of the 150 musical ambassadors of the band. Robyn Hilger, 2006 Teacher of the Year, will serve as assistant director for the band.
July 11, 2006 The Lowe Down... Lowe’s Charitable
and Educational Foundation has awarded a $5,000 Toolbox for Education grant
to Parker Elementary for a new outdoor playland. The playland project
“Parker Plays Together” will completely replace old equipment and ground
material. The new equipment and material will be safer and incorporate
physical fitness activities.
June 5, 2006 Book Worms Celebrate... Westwood Elementary is proud to announce that they are a recipient of a Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries grant. Westwood Elementary received the grant to create or expand their library book collections.
May 25, 2006 In Tune... Congratulations to the Classen School of Advanced Studies students who qualified for and participated in the Central Oklahoma Choral Directors Association Honor Chorus clinic and concert - 7th and 8th grade girls choir, Claire Deveney and Audrey Thomas; 7th and 8th grade mixed choir, Kelsey Muse; and 9th grade mixed chorus, Kevin Dejear, Elvie Ellis, James Foster, Anna Kened, Faith Smith, Zach Thomas and Marshall Wade.
A Bite of the Good Life... Peggy Beavers, third
grade teacher at Westwood Elementary, was honored by the Gazette and City
Bites, along with Kiss FM as their first Teacher of the Year. Beaver’s
students entered her name in the Gazette contest as their choice for teacher
of the year. Beavers got to choose 3 friends to accompany her in a limo ride
to City Bites for lunch. Then she was interviewed on the radio with Jack and
Ron. Additionally, the Gazette brought her all kinds of goodies and flowers.
As a special treat, City Bites brought cookies for her entire class and
fellow teachers.
Turn Around, Don't Drown To increase Oklahoman’s Flood Awareness, Oklahoma Floodplain Managers Association held a statewide poster contest open to all fourth grade students throughout the great state of Oklahoma. The second place winner for the state is Mary Tran from Putnam Heights’ Academy. Not only did she win a beautiful trophy and $150, but her poster will be seen by thousands of Oklahomans throughout the state on the calendar and the website.
May 24, 2006 E-Friends Making A Difference...
As part of the Computers 4 Kids program, computers are donated to children from low-income families in the Oklahoma City Public Schools District.

May 24, 2006 Brush with Fame... Students at Horace Mann, Columbus, Mark Twain and North Highland elementaries received the thrill of getting to dress out in Hornet's jerseys and take part in a photo shoot with Chris Paul, NBA's Rookie of the Year. All had a great time. Also, 25 lucky students had the opportunity to attend basketball camp headed by Paul at Chesapeake.
May 23, 2006 Mastering their Skills... For many months,
several Oklahoma City Public Schools' teachers committed to their own
education, worked diligently on their “TESL, Masters In Education” with the
University of Central Oklahoma. Four teachers earned their Masters with
Honors (4.0 GPA). These teachers were recognized at an Awards Dinner and
donned honor cords at the UCO Graduation.
Congratulations to Narci Kawon, Donna Williams and Deborah Weber from
Fillmore Elementary and Alicia Weber from Buchanan Elementary. Making this a
family affair was Deborah Weber and Alicia Weber, a mother and daughter
team.
May 19, 2006 A Lot to be Proud of... Congratulations to
Eugene Field Elementary's Kathleen Longaker for being named to Who's Who
Among America's Teachers, to Hong Nguyen for being named Wal-Mart teacher of
the year and to Allen Dale for receiving the Golden Apple Award for
teachers.
May 19, 2006 Highly Represented... State Representative
Richard Morrissette, a Democrat from the 92nd District in Oklahoma City,
visited Capitol Hill High School for Law Day. Representative Morrissette, an
attorney, spoke about the importance of students knowing their
constitutional rights and their responsibilities as citizens. He urged the
students to stay out of trouble and to plan ahead to obtain a high quality
education beyond high school. The students enjoyed Representative
Morrissette's inspiring and humorous presentation and many plan to become
politically active, due to his positive influence.
May 14, 2006 Academically Outstanding... The District is proud to announce that seniors Catalina Lupu, and Leah E. Stein both from Classen School of Advanced Studies, were named to the Oklahoma's 100 Academic All-State scholars. Academic All-Staters are selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership experience, extracurricular activities and community involvement as well as an essay submitted by each nominee. As you can see, this is no small feat and a huge honor for Catalina and Leah. Congratulations to both.
May 10, 2006 A Healthy Dose… The Bravo Italian Restaurant kindly treated OKCPS school nurses to a lovely lunch in honor of National Nurses Week. Everyone had a wonderful time and the food was excellent. At the luncheon, Tara Harp, school nurse at Roosevelt Middle School and Adams Elementary was named the 2005-2006 School Nurse of the Year. Also nominated was Stephanie Waller, school nurse at Hawthorne Elementary, Monroe Elementary and Stand Watie Elementary.
Out Pacing the Others… Van Buren Elementary
stepped up and ran in the Memorial Marathon. All 90 students who
participated had to run 25
miles at school to qualify for the marathon. Each student received a t-shirt
and a medal for their outstanding efforts.
Easy as Riding a Bike… At Rockwood
Elementary's Cinco de Mayo program all had a great time. Liberty Mutual and
Southwestern Bell gave a bicycle safety course where students learned the
fundamentals of riding a bike. Students who took the training received a certificate of completion
to mark their accomplishment. Bicycle helmets were given to 200 lucky
students. The police department was also in attendance providing finger
printing for the students and their families for emergency situations and
the fire department handed out free smoke detectors. In the end, this was a
very good day.
Ridgeview Elementary is proud of Jalaun Parker, 5th grader, for winning 1st place in the Drinking Water Week Poster Contest. He and his teacher Barbara Ronck met and had their picture taken with Mayor Mick Cornett. He was also introduced at the City Council Meeting. He won an $80 Wal-Mart gift card and his teacher received a$100 gift card to Lakeshore along with a bag of goodies.
Congratulations also
goes to Van Buren Elementary 5th grader, Juan Tovar, who won 3rd place in
the Drinking Water Week Poster Contest. Third place prize was a $40 Wal-Mart
gift card.
May 9, 2006 Good Call… Dunbar Elementary announces that 5th grader Samantha Cheers won first place in the Black History Month Art Competition sponsored by US Cellular and received a $500 savings bond. In the same contest 5th grader Melissa Molson won second place, receiving a $200 savings bond. Congratulations ladies, we’re proud of you.
An Apple a Day... Parker Elementary is
proud to announce that their Instructional Facilitator, Rita Gray-Martin, won the “Golden Apple Award” in the Elementary division. The award,
sponsored by the Oklahoma Council on Economic Education, Union Bank, the
University of Oklahoma’s Center for Economic Education and “The Oklahoman”
is presented for instructional expertise in the areas of entrepreneurship,
principals of finance and other economic or financial literacy concepts.
