Held Accountable...

During the month of December, Financial Services (which includes Accounts Payable, Budget, Federal Grants, General Ledger, Payroll, Purchasing and Treasury) teamed up to help those in need during this holiday season. A canned food drive was held to benefit the Jesus House. The department collected nearly 150 pounds of food that would benefit many needy families in Oklahoma City.

Also at this time, Finance Services held a Penny Drive to benefit Positive Tomorrows, a private, nonprofit agency benefiting children in Kindergarten through 12 grade in family crisis such as those living in area shelters including the City Rescue Mission and Salvation Army. They exceeded their goal of 75 pounds of coins by collecting a total of 85 pounds. This translated into $212.27 that was donated to Positive Tomorrows.

A Patchwork of Hope...

Students from Oakridge Elementary extended warm messages to victims of last year's hurricanes by working during the month of December. At art time, the students designed and decorated enough panels to complete 12 disaster relief quilts. Once the students completed their work, the panels were sent to Oklahoma Disaster Relief Volunteers who turned them into quilts. The quilts will travel across the United States to boys and girls who are hurricane survivors so they will know the students of Oakridge Elementary are reaching out to them. Special thanks go to Oakridge Principal Cynthia Barchue; fifth grade teacher, Carolyn Mischke; art teacher, Samye Joiner; Oklahoma Campers on Wheels and Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma Disaster Relief Volunteers.

The Gift of Music...

At the weekly Kangaroo Kickoff, Kaiser Elementary was presented with a wonderful gift of $400 from the Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) music fraternity. Each year SAI provides funds to a school music program in the metro area. SAI members Kathlyn Reynolds and Martha Pendleton, retired music educators, presented Kaiser Elementary's music specialist, Susie Bratcher with the check. Kaiser's ten-year-old electronic keyboard was in desperate need of repair and maintenance making this gift all the more special.

Crossing Borders...

Quail Creek Elementary is proud to have hosted students from Kyungbok Elementary in Seoul, Korea for three weeks. A group of 26 Korean elementary students experienced American culture and school. Quail Creek's students, in turn, where exposed to another culture as well. The Korean students spoke English, attended regular classes and stayed with host Quail Creek parents. This opportunity was made possible thanks the Educational and Cultural Interactions.

Flying High...

It's not that education isn't exciting enough, Kaiser Elementary teacher, Marty Flint, just wanted more. So he decided to build his own airplane with the help of his daughter Margie, a student at Classen School of Advanced Studies. Click on the link below to read an article Marty wrote about his first flight in his new airplane. There are extra-curricular activities and then there are extreme extra-curricular activities - let's all give Marty a hand for being creative in and out of the classroom. Marty's article.

College Bound...

Northeast Academy is one of four high schools who will pilot a program to help prepare students for the academic rigors of college. A $140,000 course-rigor grant will be implemented at the high schools to better prepare our students. This program is a part of the National Governors Association who awarded three grants totaling $290,000 for efforts to improve the college readiness of Oklahoma high school students.
