February Good News for OKCPS 

  • Twenty-three OKCPS teachers earned National Board Certification.
     
    • Ninety-five students participated in the Academic Decathlon. Northwest Classen walked off with top honors.
  • Sarah Jean Tate, 5th grade teacher at Westwood, was recently recognized by OKC magazine, Vibraciones, as best elementary teacher for the Hispanic community in OKC. And, Bricktown Rotary adopted the Pre-K classes in their First Book Campaign.
     
  • OK Centennial High School acquired instruments for first-time band students who practiced and learned to play well enough to take part in the Martin Luther King Day parade.
     
  • The Baby Gap, through Brooke Davis in the district’s Homeless Education Program, adopted a family of five providing food, clothing, and toys during the holidays.
     
    • After receiving a Youth as Resource grant, Classen drama and IB students wrote and produced a puppet show that delighted Wilson Elementary audiences of all ages.
  • Not only did Coolidge Elementary achieve the greatest AYP gains in their category, 87.25%, Federal Aviation Administration gifted classroom supplies to their teachers.
     
  • Principal Natalie Johnson, Ridgeview Elementary, received a special grant through CCOSA/ OK Association for Elementary School Principals. It is to support the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program. It will be used to buy t-shirts, pencils, and vests to wear while the dads work at the school, certificates, and pizza parties. The program is designed to specifically target dads for parental outreach. It encourages safety and supports a great learning environment.
     
    • North Highland Elementary teacher, Gary Hoeffken, a docent with the Oklahoma History Center, and fifth grade students from Buchanan Elementary took part in celebration ceremonies of Oklahoma’s new quarter.
  • After 4 classes this school year and 84 CPR certified district staff, Health Services’ Debbie Johnson, continues to maintain compliance with state mandates. The district now has a total 190 certified staff.

A+ Athlete of the Week

 

A+ Athlete of the Week Sophomore, Ebbony Williams was recognized as the Oklahoma Centennial High School A+ Athlete of the week during the Biston football game again Lincoln Christian in Tulsa on October 12, 2007.

Local Station, Channel 47 in Tulsa chose an athlete from each school who met the requirement for the award. The athlete must participate in a fall sport recognized by the Oklahoma Secondary School Athletic Association, have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA, be involved in school and community activities.

Ebbony was the starting catcher for the Lady Bison softball team, plays varsity basketball, participates in AAU and USATF summer track program, where she throws the shot put.  Ebbony is the sophomore class secretary,  a member of Leadership/Student Council, has a 3.52 GPA and is very active in her church youth group. Ebbony is the daughter of Kevin and Sherry Williams.  Her younger brother K.G. Williams is an 8th grader at Centennial. Ebbony was nominated for this honor by Coach Pugh and Ms. McGee.

Too Much To Lose training

The program is a state wide initiative to stop underage drinking and the sell of alcohol to minors. The Centennial High School Leadership has chosen 2M2L as the year long community service program

US Grant High School Marine Corps JROTC Program

U.S. Grant High School Marine Corps JROTC Program received recognition on June 10, 2007 that the unit has been awarded “NAVAL HONOR SCHOOL” for the 2006-2007 school year. This award is presented to the top 11 schools out of 43 competing in the Eighth Marine Corps District.  US Grant is the only MCJROTC School in Oklahoma to receive this distinction. Congratulations on a mission well done!

100 Book Reading Contest

Bellow are photos of our students who won the 100 BOOK READING CONTEST at Britton Elementary. Many students participated and all received books, posters, and other prizes for doing such an awesome job of reading this year. The 3 students pictured bellow each won the coveted prize of $100 Barnes & Noble gift certificate from our awesome school headed by Mrs. Kimberly Zachery.
