Telstar Elementary Celebrates Grand Opening
MAPS
for Kids and the Oklahoma City Public Schools marked another
milestone Monday, March 27 as students, parents, teachers,
community members, city and school district officials gathered
for the official grand opening of the restored Telstar
Elementary School at 9521 NE 16th Street in east
Oklahoma City.

The nearly $3 million
renovation converts Telstar into a Pre-Kindergarten through 6th
grade school accommodating 360 students. The renovation includes
a 19,443 square foot addition including two classrooms, support
spaces and administrative offices, a special program facility,
commons area, gymnasium, and facility and maintenance upgrades
throughout campus.
Patricia
Watson-Hunt, Telstar principal said, “It seems like just
yesterday when renovation began and the result is everything we
dreamed of. The Telstar community has looked forward to this
day ever since MAPS for Kids was approved in 2001. Our
teachers, staff, parents and especially our students are
tremendously excited about their new school.”
Bob Moore, Superintendent of
Oklahoma City Public Schools said, “The renovation of Telstar is
really remarkable both inside and out. MAPS for Kids has
delivered another promise - a renovated neighborhood school that
will educate our future leaders with the latest technology
available amid a safe environment conducive to learning.”
Carl
Edwards, Chairman of the OCMAPS Trust commented, “It’s really
exciting to see Telstar completed. The implementation of MAPS
for Kids is becoming even more evident across Oklahoma City with
quality projects being delivered on time and on budget. 2006
and 2007 will prove to be very busy years as the balance of
projects go under design, construction and renovation.”
