Roosevelt Students Put You to the Test
Oklahoma City -- After achieving double-digit gains on state test
scores in both reading and math, eighth grade students from Roosevelt Middle
School invite you to the OKCPS Board of Education meeting at 5:30 p.m.
Monday, July 17 to see what it takes to pass the test. Students will
administer to the media and other school officials a sample test from the
State Department of Education to see if you can meet the challenge with as
much success.
For the second year, Oklahoma City Public Schools showed major
improvement in scores on the State Core Curriculum Tests (known also as the
CRT's). Students in grades 3–8 take the tests each year to determine school
achievement and also adequate yearly progress under the federal No Child
Left Behind Act. This year, all four grades improved in the percent of
students scoring satisfactory and advanced in reading, and all grades but
grade 5 showed major percentage gains in mathematics.
“We are very proud of the overall achievement of our students,”
says Linda S. Brown, Interim Superintendent of Schools. “While many urban
school districts across the nation continue to struggle with state tests,
OKCPS continues to excel. We give credit not only our students and teachers,
but also the support of parents and the Oklahoma City Community.”
One of the greatest successes of the district when it comes to
test scores is at the middle school level, where all schools that have
struggled in the past showed major improvement and others continued their
success from previous years.
“When voters passed MAPS for Kids in 2001, one of the main
focuses was achievement in our middle schools. This recent round of testing
shows we are accomplishing that goal,” says Brown.
In addition to the sample test, the test score percentages will
be released at Monday’s meeting during a presentation by Dr. George Kimball,
Director of Planning and Research. Students and principals will also be
available for media interviews.
