Hispanic Heritage Month Begins at Westwood Elementary

Oklahoma City – To kick-off the month-long observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, students and parents at Westwood Elementary school at 1701 Exchange Avenue will hold “Festival Hispano” on Friday, September 15, 2006 from 5-8p.m.

Established by Congress in 1988, Hispanic Heritage month runs through Oct. 15. The dates were chosen to include Independence Day in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile and Mexico. The month also incorporates the Oct. 12 observation of Dia de La Raza, a Mexican holiday celebrating the multicultural heritage of the Americas.

“The history and celebration of Hispanic culture is very important to our students and community,” says Dr. Jan Borelli, Principal at Westwood. “We want to offer our community a chance to celebrate the multicultural heritage of our city and school district.”

The Festival Hispano will include a Hispanic food court set up in the cafeteria as well as a carnival for the students. The students will also be performing multi-cultural dances and there will be awards given to the most festive outfits. Media is encouraged to join in the celebration!
