A Familiar Name Graces the Halls of Douglass High School

Oklahoma City—This week marks the official grand opening of the new Douglass High School at 900 N MLK. The 27 million dollar school is the first new high school built using money generated by the MAPS for Kids bond issue passed by voters in 2001.

As part of the festivities, Frederick Douglass IV, a direct descendent of the man for whom the school was named, will be addressing students in a special assembly Friday, April 7. Frederick Douglass IV and his wife BJ carry on the family legacy by bringing to life former slave and famed orator Frederick Douglass and his wife Anna. The pair perform a dramatization that includes Douglass’ life and struggles. The act is intertwined with historic songs from Douglass’ era.

Media is encouraged to attend the Douglass’ performance at 9:45 a.m. on Friday in the Douglass High School auditorium. Mr. and Mrs. Douglass will be available for interviews following the assembly.

The Douglass’ will also be part of the grand opening ceremonies on Saturday, April 8. The celebration begins at 10:30 a.m.
