First Bell Rings for New Douglass High School

Oklahoma City – After an extended winter break, students at Frederick A. Douglass High School begin their spring semester January 18, 2006 in a brand-new school.

Douglass High School is the first new school to be completed using funds generated by the MAPS for Kids program approved by voters in 2001. The new building features more than 50 classrooms, eight science labs, a mock courtroom and new auditorium and gymnasium.

Media is asked to arrive at the school at 9 a.m. if they would like the opportunity to talk with students or staff. At 9:30 a.m., a welcome from Board of Education Chairman Cliff Hudson is scheduled to take place in the school’s mock courtroom. Students will also be welcomed and provided with a brief history of Douglass High School from board members Thelma Parks and Joe Clytus. Alumni Association members will also be on hand to give tours of the new facility and orient students to their new school. For more information, please contact Cordell Jordan at 587-0232.
