New North Side High School to be Named
Oklahoma Centennial High
Oklahoma City
– 2007 will mark the 100th anniversary of
statehood for the great state of Oklahoma. It will also mark the
opening of a new high school in northeast Oklahoma City.
To
commemorate both events, the administrators and staff of the
school currently known as Eisenhower High School are asking the
Oklahoma City Board of Education to approve a name change to the
Oklahoma Centennial High School at their next scheduled board
meeting on Monday, May 1.
“We
are very excited about having the opportunity to work in a
creative environment that will provide our students with the
best education and leadership available,” says Carole Thompson,
Principal of the new school. “As we begin our transition into
excellence, we believe the changing of the name of our school
will assist us in creating an image that reflects our goals and
desires for the community and the future of our students.”

The
new high school is being built as part of the MAPS for Kids bond
issue passed by voters in 2001. The school is slated to go in at
1301 NE 101, the current site of Eisenhower Elementary School.
The facility is being completely renovated to accommodate the
7-12 grade students in this growing part of the city.
“I
often say to look to the future, you have to look at the past,”
says Dr. Rochelle Converse, Executive Director of Student
Performance. “To name a school that will be a vital part of the
future of our students after a mark in history like the
centennial, projects an image of prosperity that we will
continue to show in our students and school community.”
The
Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education is expected to
approve the name change at Monday’s meeting. Media is encouraged
to attend the vote.
