Tentative Plans for OKC MAPS for Kids High Schools Presented

Oklahoma City – The Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education today hears recommendations from the school district on the transition of students to the new John Marshall High School and the fully renovated Eisenhower High School beginning in the fall of 2006.

The two new schools are part of the MAPS for Kids plan. When the plan is complete in 2007, the new John Marshall High School being built at NW 122nd and Portland will house 510 students in grades 7 through 12 at a cost of $25.5 million. The plan also includes converting Eisenhower Elementary at NE 101 and Kelley to a comprehensive high school. Renovations include adding a competition gymnasium, auditorium and science laboratory. The facility will house 585 students in grades 7 through 12 at a cost of $16.9 million. Construction also continues on the new Douglass High School at 900 MLK and U.S. Grant High School at 5016 S Penn.

“All of these new high schools will offer district families state-of-the-art learning facilities for their children,” says Oklahoma City Schools Superintendent Bob Moore. “The new buildings will help keep secondary students in the district and assure that growth needs are met in the future.”

The preliminary district recommendations include drawing new attendance boundary lines for both John Marshall and Eisenhower students in grades 7 through 12. Staffing of the new schools will begin in early 2006. The district will hold a number of forums to get public input of the proposed changes. The final recommendations will be presented to the Board of Education in November.
