COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This class is based on The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey. The book is designed to help students learn life principles and values that will lead them down a path of success. The seven habits are: 1) Be proactive, 2) Begin with the end in mind, 3) Put first things first, 4) Think win-win, 5) Seek first to understand, then to be understood, 6) Synergize, 7) Sharpen the saw. Great emphasis is placed on surrounding oneself with positive and supportive people, so parents are encouraged to stay up-to-date on the habit we are studying and consider ways to help their child achieve the goals. Check the Web page as we move through the chapters for information on each habit and the corresponding “baby steps.” Your child will learn about this assignment during the first week of class and you may also access this information on the webpage.

GRADING POLICY

This is a self-discovery class, so the assignments should not be difficult if you stop to think. Grades are weighted evenly and are based on the following:

1.      Participation and preparation – student will arrive with all necessary materials (notebook, pencil, assignment) and participate in daily class activities, exercises and discussions.

20 participation/preparation points are available each class period.

2.      Assignments/Tests

COME SEE ME! If you are having trouble with anything, please talk to me about it. There is always a positive solution to the problem and I am happy to help you find it.

TESTS

The following procedure will be followed regarding written test-taking:

1.      Students will receive a reminder and basic information two class periods before the written test.

2.      Students will receive a detailed review one class period before the written test.

3.      Students who are absent on one of the above days will still be held responsible to take the test.

4.      Students who are absent on both days will be responsible for taking the test one class period after they return to class.

5.      Students who are present for both days, but absent for the test will be responsible for taking the test upon returning to class.

ATTENDANCE

We will be doing something new and different all the time. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get makeup work. Please check with me for missed assignments and get missed notes from a classmate.

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!

Stuff happens, right?  (I have ACTUALLY had a dog eat my homework… he must have been pretty hungry.) You will receive one “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) pass to keep from being put on the study hall list if you forget your homework. You must still complete the assignment and turn it in the following class, but turning in your ICE pass will “buy” you a day. Your pass is only for regular homework assignments and cannot be used on long-term projects, classwork, or tests. Save it for a real emergency, then if you don’t need it you can turn it in for 10 bonus points at the end of the quarter!
