Welcome to the Visual Arts Website!

Mike Muller, MFA

Welcome! My name is Mike Muller, artist and educator. This is my fourth year at Belle Isle, and I enjoy working with the students and faculty here. I have worked in this district for twelve years and this is my favorite school by far! I earned my BFA in fine art from the University of Oklahoma and an MFA in fine art from the University of North Texas.  I have exhibited regionally and I have special expertise and training in arts integration. Students in my classes are involved in various activities designed to integrate the visual arts with other academic subjects. They learn to make connections between different fields of study such as art, science, history, language and math and begin to recognize the interrelationship of those areas of knowledge in the world around them.

Available Courses & Course Descriptions:

6th grade art - 9 week rotation.  Every 6th grade student will attend this course for one quarter.  In this class, students will learn the basic fundamentals of art, develop a foundation from which they can build, and have an introduction to the history of art with a focus on ancient Greece and Rome.

7th grade art - one or two semester rotation.  This course will review and enhance the basic skills that were learned the previous year and will also start developing an aesthetic approach to art appreciation.  Not only will the student develop an appreciation of art, they will also expand on their knowledge of art history with a focus on the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

8th grade art - one or two semester rotation.  This course is a continuation of the previous two.  This course will touch areas that deal with graphic design, commercial art, architecture, and photography, as well as, continuing art history with a focus on the 1950s, 60s and 70s..

Grading Practices for Visual Art

In levels 6th ,7th and 8th grade of visual art classes, the emphasis is on cooperation and participation in the creative process. Student work produced is primarily evaluated using visual criteria, which is based in formal analysis using the elements and principles of design. Consideration is also given to the individual expressive abilities which students possess that may contribute to the quality of their work. Students will also be evaluated on their mastery of Oklahoma State P.A.S.S. objectives in the visual arts. Student art projects graded individually, in addition there will be one art history report assigned for each grade level. All grades are averaged at the end of the semester for a final grade. You can log onto www.sde.state.ok.us and click the P.A.S.S. tab for specific information on grade level requirements in visual art.
