Board Of Directors Position Description

Board service is an opportunity to contribute
ourselves to a cause in which we believe.

Traits of effective directors:

1.                           Compatibility  ie. supports organization

2.                   Enthusiastic

3.                   Judgment that combines wisdom with experience

4.                   Just, the director is persistent in the pursuit of right

5.                   Team players

6.                   Specialized expertise

The Board expects its members to:

l       Be a positive example for the School

l       Inform others in the community about BIEMS

l       Be informed in regards to the school's:

1. Principal, teachers and staff
2. mission, contract, policies and programs
3. building and grounds
4. issues related to any of the above

l       Attend regular and special meetings of the Board as well as committee assignments.

1. Review the minutes of any previous meetings and related addenda prior to a meeting.
2. Realize that once the agenda has been set for a meeting any other business can only be discussed upon the approval of the board members in attendance.
3. In cases of board meeting absence accept decisions made.

l       Participate in the discussion of Board matters.

1. Focus on issues, keeping comments positive and constructive.
2. Respect the right of board members to have opposing ideas and opinions.
3. Accept the decisions made by a majority vote that may at times go against the opinions of yourself and other board members.

l       Support the Administrator and Teacher regarding their actions in enforcing Board Policy.

1. The role of the board is to set policy.
2. The role of the administrator is to carry out policy in the day to day operations of the school.
3. Board membership is a privilege and should not be used to influence the teachers or staff at BIEMS. 

l       Be able to explain and/or defend positions of the board on any area of policy.
