Welcome to Between the Lions!

Between the Lions is a PBS children's puppet show designed to promote reading. The show is a co-production between WGBH in Boston and Sirius Thinking LTD., in New York City, in association with Mississippi Public Broadcasting.  Between the Lions focuses on teaching reading and a love of books to young children in a fun, informative way.  In addition to teaching basic reading, pronunciation, and grammar skills, Between the Lions also strives to promote a general love of reading in its viewers. It explores the many subjects that books can cover and shows how different people may enjoy reading different things. It also demonstrates the value of reference books and the importance of reading in other everyday activities like using a computer, cooking with a recipe, or finding your way with street signs. Above all, Between the Lions expresses a contagious enthusiasm for reading, with the underlying message being "Reading is cool".

Between the Lions will be at Emerson on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.  Teen mothers of Emerson, bring your children to enjoy great reading and entertaining puppetry, and receive a free and wonderful gift, courtesy of  Between the Lions.

Emerson Peer Educators in Partnership with

Work to Bring Breast Cancer Awareness to the Community

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the students in the Emerson High School program, Breast Health Education for Adolescents and Women in their Community: A Peer Education Program, are beginning to prepare for the annual Race for the Cure walk on Saturday, October 4th, 2008.

The program at Emerson is a response to an identified area of need for health education among young women ages 15-23 and is designed to encourage healthy practices and screening for women in minority communities.

This program is teaching our young women to protect themselves and encourage their family and friends to do the same. Students work on community outreach projects for the school year.

The Power of a Promise

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded on a promise between two sisters.  Susan G. Komen had a 3 year struggle with breast cancer and, before passing away, her sister, Nancy G. Brinker, promised her she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.  In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and it launched the global breast cancer movement.  Thanks to events that raise money for breast health and breast cancer, there has been over $1 billion invested into that promise.

For the past five years Emerson High School Peer Educators have joined this worthy cause! Peer educators are a group of high school science-health career students who believe they can decrease the number of deaths of women from breast cancer by teaching small classes designed for their peers about breast health.  These classes teach healthy life choices for male and female breast cancer prevention, the importance of clinical exams, the value of knowing family health history, and how and when to perform breast self-exams. Emerson peer educators will participate in the Oklahoma City Race for the Cure, a 5k Race and 1 mile family run/walk, on Saturday, October 4th, 2008

For registration information, you can contact Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Pirrong, Mr. Williams, or any peer educator, or you can visit:

Did you know . . .

  • Cancerous tumors in the breast usually grow very slowly so that by the time one is large enough to be felt as a lump, it may have been growing for as long as 10 years.

  • Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women ages 15-54 years old.

  • More than 11,100 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

  • More than 1,100 will die from the disease.

  • Not only women get breast cancer.  About 600 men will die from breast cancer in the U.S. this year.
