"This is a very exciting day for the Douglass High family, MAPS for Kids and Oklahoma City," said the former Douglass High School Principal on April 8, as she opened the ceremony to dedicate the new Douglass High School.

Students, faculty, alumni and community members gathered to celebrate the grand opening along with special guests including Governor Brad Henry and First Lady Kim Henry, Representative Earnest Istook, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, Chairman of Oklahoma City's School Board Cliff Hudson, and Frederick Douglass IV, the great-great grandson of the famous abolitionist and writer for whom the school is named.

The celebration began Friday, April 7 when Frederick Douglass IV and his wife BJ performed a special assembly featuring a short history of Frederick Douglass stressing the importance of eliminating racial stereotypes and breaking down cultural walls.

Mr. Douglass IV was the keynote speaker for Saturday's Grand Opening where he told of the importance of education. Especially education of black youth as a vehicle for success, a message his great-great grandfather had in the 19th century.

The new Douglass High School is the first new school in Oklahoma City in 50 years. It features a mock courtroom, 54 classrooms, eight science labs, competition and practice gyms, media center and a theater/auditorium. Demolition began on the old Douglass High School Wednesday, April 5, to make way for a new all-city athletic complex featuring a football and track stadium.

New Douglass gets mayor's approval »
By Bryan Dean of NewsOk.com

Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett took a tour Thursday of the new $33 million Douglass High School, which he said will be "a beautiful school" when it opens in January
.

The school is part of the $700 million MAPS for Kids plan that will put every child attending Oklahoma City Public Schools in a new or renovated school. Douglass will be the first of the city's completely rebuilt high schools to open.

"I think our community is going to be really proud of what's developing here," Cornett said. "It's large, and it's spacious. It seems high-tech. It's everything we've envisioned."

Eric Wenger, MAPS for Kids program manager, took Cornett through several of the halls and classrooms that are mostly complete.

Douglass High School was built in 1954 at 900 Martin Luther King Ave. The new school is just to the south of the existing building.

"All the rooms have the Internet," Wenger said. "Most will have wireless. It's more of a college-style. There are a lot of things here they don't have now."

Cornett compared Douglass to the SBC Bricktown Ballpark.

"When the ballpark opened in the spring of 1998, the citizens immediately developed an opinion about MAPS," Cornett said. "We've been on a roll ever since that ballpark opened. When we get the three high schools open, the citizens are once again going to develop an opinion about MAPS for Kids, and we need it to be just as positive as when the ballpark opened."

A Message from the Principal »

Dear Douglass High School Students, Parents and Patrons.

I have been given the privilege and honor of serving as the principal of Frederick Douglass High School. What an exciting time this is to join the Douglass staff, faculty and community! With a rich heritage behind us and a new building..., we have the promise of returning to the best of times.

Our commitment and focus will, of course, be teaching and learning. We want to provide our students with a myriad of positive educational experiences, leadership opportunities and social situations which will guide their growth into self-confident, high achieving adult members of our society.

Our school is a part of our community, and we want our community to be an active part of our school. We invite our parents, community leaders, neighborhood residents, businesses, youth organizations, institutions of higher learning, churches, agencies and all who hold an interest in Douglass and the future of our youth to join us as our quest in providing our students with educational opportunities that are unsurpassed.

This is a great community, with active parents, distinguished alumni and a group of students with wonderful potential to reach whatever goals they set. Let us all commit to forming a team. Together Everyone Accomplishes More.

Sincerely,
DHS Principal
