On May 23, 2007, four Classen SAS orchestra students
performed with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in its annual
Side-by-Side Concert. Students must be a member of either
the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra or the Oklahoma Youth Symphony,
and be recommended by their directors to participate.
An article in the May 19
Edmond Sun
states... "Marty Davis, executive director for the
Oklahoma Youth Symphony, said the students audition
based on both skill and dedication to the symphony.
* * *
[Robert] Cooper [Exec Director, OYO] said, aside from
talent, experience plays a large role in who they send
to audition for the seats. Once selected, students in
the group audition in front of a panel from the
philharmonic. Students participating have a chance to
play directly not only with professionals, but also with
their potential professors.
Classen orchestra students
Jessica McCrary (1st
violin), William Modrall (bass), Shealynn Morefield (flute)
and Diana Ruffin (cello)
performed a piece comprised of four movements from Dvorak
Symphony No. 8 in G minor, Op. 88, with the Philharmonic.
And they were outstanding!
