CORRECTION: The
Key Club Flea Market/Carnival is April 21st NOT April 14.
This is it Folks,
the Final Notice in the Classen News before the Arrival of the
OU Big Event at CSAS on Saturday morning, April 14th
Yes,
volunteers
are still needed to
help the
Sooners help us paint some classrooms, do landscaping and GET RID of some
JUNK, maybe even make some repairs, with many thanks to all who have already
responded!
Indoor volunteers, junk movers or bench fixers:
PLEASE call Barbara at 843-1122 or email
bdew@repairman.com,
pronto, thank you.
What is the OU big event?
The nation’s largest single-day get out & help others volunteer
extravaganza.
What’s in it for CSAS?
Landscaping & six (6) freshly painted classrooms, including Janet
Kingsolver, Jack Harding, Laurel Pierce,
Leslie Oliver, Trena Brown, Brenda Williams &
Brian Horn’s rooms.
Wait a minute, that’s 7 rooms, not 6!
Surely we can come up with enough volunteers to paint 1 extra room and Mr.
Wong’s wall. With enough volunteers we could throw in a wall for Mr.
Holzberger and move some junk to the dumpster and a fridge to the Neighbors’
yard. (We mean that literally: Micah Neighbors lives across 19th
from CSAS, and her parents will let us dump the junk refrigerator in their
yard for Big Trash Day on the 16th. Thank you all Neighbors!)
When are volunteers needed?
Thursday & Friday
After school to scrape, Tape, Cover, and wash really filthy areas and fill
holes. Bring scrapers and spackling knives. Ladders and scaffolding to be
put into place on Friday.
Saturday:
in
the a.m. to begin painting rooms except Ms. Kingsolver’s which needs
to wait until 12:05 for people to be allowed onto the 2nd floor
after ACT.
Also,
to help w/ landscaping and move junk to dumpster & Neighbors.
Also:
There are a couple of interesting projects that would involve strong
people, heavy screws, finding studs and attaching heavy wooden objects to
walls.
Also:
the kids’ benches near the Photo/dance/ceramic annex need major repair.
Also:
Guides for Big event volunteers would come in handy.
Also:
Furniture will need to be moved back by us if the Sooners run out of time.
The little kids’ wallball court is fine just as
it is.
When do the Sooners arrive?
Between 10:30 and 11 am. Saturday.
Why wait til after 12 to start Ms. Kingsolver’s room?
ACT tests… quiet pleas.
What do Saturday volunteers need to bring?
Their own tools… brushes, rollers… paint will
be provided. Tall ladders & 2 more extension poles for rollers seriously
needed.
What if it rains?
If too rainy to landscape, volunteers can move inside and paint more walls
or put on ponchos & move more junk.
WHAT ABOUT THE ACT???? Tight controls will be
in place until 12:30 when the act written test will be over.
Entry to school for big event will be the
c-hall entry by cafeteria, CHECK-IN for volunteers will be in cafeteria.
Rooms painted in a.m. will be those most remote from ACT testing. Junk
removal is also remote from ACT. Thank you, oh so very much.
Stop the presses! Hold the horses! Brietta at OU Big Event just
informed us that we are scheduled for three crews of OU volunteers on
Saturday, with a total of 59 Sooners if they all show up. What we don't
know is how many are scheduled to landscape and how many are scheduled
for painting. Do we need additional volunteers from CSAS for
Saturday? My thought is that we are in pretty good shape for CSAS
painters - if they all show up, at least in terms of painting one extra
room. If the Sooners are flexible enough to haul junk, we might be able
to get them to to that too. As for repairing benches and other odd
items on the list, we would need to be prepared to do those ourselves -
these items are gravy.
Guides/escorts would be useful to be present by 10:15 on Saturday - the
Sooners are expected to arrive between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. I have two
or three volunteers for interior guides in addition to myself. Could
use 1 or two more guides on Saturday morning, but most of the guides
would NOT need to stay past noon. It seems to me that one guide can
easily show the Sooners to the C-Hall rooms (definitely Oliver and
Williams, and Mr. Wong's wall - we hope) and then the same guide, with
one or two other guide to VERY quietly take a crew to Trena Brown's
room, Ms. Pierce's room, Mr. Harding's room, and Mr. Horn's room. CSAS
volunteers are painting Ms. Kingsolver's room beginning immediately
after the ACT... also the hardest room to paint ( any early volunteers
can start cutting in before the ACT ends if they are QUIET.)
Brietta at OU said that water for volunteers would be a welcome gift and
that the sack lunches provided to volunteers typically are not that
great, so snacks would be warmly received. Any snacks would be offered
in the cafeteria. I am not organizing snacks but will help organize
water and ice. Except mayhaps I should order a big sandwich from
Someplace Else? Anyone at CSAS with tall ladders please call or email me
at 843-1122/bdew@repairman.com. Ladders and any scaffolding need
to be in place on FRIDAY after school to avoid clanging and banging
during ACT. I'm off to get yellow "Do Not Cross" tape and other
supplies. Thanks everybody.
