CLASSEN STUDENTS, TEACHERS, STAFF:
Have you driven around Oklahoma City and seen those large green and yellow recycling bins at other schools' Wonder why we don't have one at Classen SAS' Well, here's the skinny!
The company recycles all paper goods and gives a percentage back to the school. As in, $$. We had one but the neighborhood inhabitants filled it with so much trash that the company had to remove it.
My son works in recycling at DEQ, so I have been working with him to get our bin returned. It just breaks my heart to throw any kind of paper away. Even the curbside recycling of paper often ends up in the trash, so this is a viable option for helping the environment as well as earning money for our school.
Mrs. Kingsolver and the Builders Club are collecting paper for recycling but she does not want to be responsible for the green monster. She told me that when it was here before, she spent many hours policing the dumpster, placing signs on it, even dumpster-diving to retrieve illegal goods. She will not do this again, and this is understandable. However, with the paper goods' newspapers, paper copies, used paper, etc. that we throw away every day, we could be earning some needed money for our school. One of the company's concerns is that we won't have enough paper, but they have not seen what we toss.
I cannot take on the supervision of the dumpster, but will send my students out every Friday to dump paper into it. Please encourage your student's teachers to do the same. If the trash appears again and we lose it, at least we will have tried once again to participate in this worthwhile program. I also am going to write a blurb for the Gatewood Neighborhood Newsletter.
