Summer Reading –IB English 1A  --(11th grade)

The following is a list of books required for summer reading. We will begin the school year with a test on Poisonwood Bible so you might want to consider taking notes or annotating as you read.

  • Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver- this is relatively new but available at any bookstore or library. The book is about a missionary family that moves to the Congo. It is beautifully written and very accessible.

Also

  • Death  of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. This is a relatively short play. It is however very internal and can be a struggle to read. Don’t worry. Come to class with some understanding of the play. First quarter we complete in depth study of Arthur Miller and The Crucible during which time we will reread a large part of Death of a Salesman as well.

  • If you have not read How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster please read it. I have a few copies to check out if needed.

*Fyi-Novels or plays you will study during IB English 1A—I will give you a detailed syllabus and schedule the first day of class. We will begin the year with a work on Poisonwoood Bible, move quickly into a review of style analysis, and then The Crucible and Death of a Salesman
