Piano Focus I and II                                                             Teacher – Mrs. Dalton

Piano I and II

These classes are designed for the student who has an interest in keyboard techniques.  The curriculum is tailored to further the student’s ability to read music, improvise and develop technical skills.  The study of music theory is also included.

GRADE SCALE

  90-100 = A

  80 – 89 = B

  70 – 79 = C

  60 – 69 = D

    0 – 59 = F

Students will be graded on daily practicing, sight-reading, ensemble projects, written theory assignments as well as preparation for performances.

Unexcused absences cannot be made up.  Tardies will be handled in accordance with school policy.  Students need to be in class on time so vital information is not missed.  Assignments are due at the beginning of class.  Failure to turn assignments in on time may result in a deduction of points.  Extenuating circumstances do arise from time to time and will be taken into consideration on a case-by-case basis.

NO EATING OR DRINKING WILL BE ALLOWED BY STUDENTS IN THE PIANO LAB!  CELL PHONES, I-PODS OR OTHER ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT MUST BE TURNED “OFF” AND BE OUT OF SIGHT UNLESS SPECIAL PERMISSION IS GIVEN.  Such equipment, if seen or heard in the classroom, will be taken from the student and delivered to the principal to be held until a parent or guardian comes to retrieve it (District Policy).

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Students will need a 1” 3-ring black binder (doubles as a performance folder), notebook paper, two (2) pencils and a pair of headphones.  These items must be brought to class every day.  If a student is irresponsible in this, very valuable class time for working and grading will be lost, time that will have to be made up as homework.  Any student who brings his/her supplies regularly and works diligently during class should not have a lot of homework.  The first grade in any piano class will be for having all required materials and signatures.   A headphone adaptor and staff paper will be provided for each student.

STUDENT RECITALS

All students will perform in a Spring recital.  Dates will be announced at the beginning of the second semester.  Advanced piano students will have other opportunities to perform throughout the school year.  Select students will also perform at Penn Square at Christmas time.
