Safe & Drug Free Schools and Communities
Program Description –
The Oklahoma City Public Schools Safe
& Drug Free Schools and Communities program is
funded through the U.S. Department of Education.
The program assists students at all grade levels and
in all schools by providing prevention education
about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs as well as
violence prevention and character education. The program also
coordinates student assistance programs.
Professional
development opportunities and program materials are
available for teachers, counselors and other
employees who are interested in working with
students who have problems related to the
above-referenced items. We are committed to working
with youth friendly and youth serving agencies that
have a vested interest in serving the diverse needs
of our students.
General
Information -

Non-competitive grant funding awarded on a
yearly basis. Per student allocation based on
student enrollment
-
Funding provides direct services to students by
community partners and stipends for teachers,
counselors and paraprofessionals who work with
students in a mentoring or counseling capacity
during non-school hours
-
Non-direct service projects include: Security
Equipment upgrades (limited amount of funds
available yearly) for items such as scanners,
surveillance cameras; paid OSBI
checks for Volunteers/Tutors; monthly and yearly
data collection (gun/knife/other weapons reports
required by law to be filed immediately
following incident – including toy weapons);
curriculum, supplies and materials for
counselors and others who work with children in
an effort to promote Safe & Drug Free Schools
and Communities

Professional development and technical
assistance for crisis management planning, safe
schools, bullying, gang intervention, managing
aggressive behavior, conflict resolution, anger
management, substance abuse, Internet Safety and
more!

Annual budget is about $340K; 2 staff members
Targeted
Population – all students
in grades Pre-K through 12th grade
Program Goals
– decrease incidence
of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs; increase
student involvement in prevention programs and
encourage participation in programs that help build
character and that provide sound decision making
skills.
Instructional
Approaches – Work with
classroom teachers to infuse Safe & Drug Free
concepts into Core classes as well as special events
for students.
Program
Services - Coordination of
Emergency Intervention Services for students K-12. Student
Assistance Programs and School Based Counseling
services; Student transportation to special events,
and Home & School Connection Newsletter to
all elementary schools in English and Spanish.

Northcare, Effective
Transitions, Sunbeam Counseling, Transitions Counseling,
United Way of Metro OKC, Girl Scouts, Oklahoma City
Police Department, Juvenile Probation Department.
