READING FIRST
Reading First is a federally funded competitive
grant opportunity provided through the Oklahoma
State Department of Education. Oklahoma City Public
Schools' Title I Reading First Plan develops
successful readers through quality initial
instruction, early identification of reading
difficulties and intensive interventions in grades K
- 3. The Houghton Mifflin
Reading Program serves as the core reading program
for the delivery of high quality, explicit and
systematic instruction in phonemic awareness,
phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Through on-going professional development, coaching,
modeling and support, Reading First Coaches continue
to work to strengthen school capacity designed to
help teachers develop expertise in the delivery of
high quality reading instruction. The projected
number of students to be served by the Reading First
Program for the school year is more than 2,100
students at 8 campuses throughout the District.
