Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program
that the staff at Ridgeview has adopted to encourage students to read.
It is also used as a source to track reading development. Our school
has a wide range of reading material to fit every student's interest and
ability level.
Prior to participating in the
Accelerated Reader
program, each student is asked to take a test using the
STAR reading assessment. This computerized test provides teachers with
individual reading levels. Once this is identified, the students are
given a list of books that match their individual reading ability.
Each child chooses a book from their
list. After reading their AR book, they take a comprehension test on
the computer. This is to see how well they understood and retained the
theme, characters and settings from their story. If answered correctly,
each book is worth points toward prizes and awards.
Throughout the year, students are
reassessed using the STAR program. Teachers monitor each child's
reading progress and adjusts their lists as needed to help them continue
to excel
as independent readers.
