Language Arts is an area which is crucial to the academic growth and the social development of a child. Our classes will be focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing, which fosters expressive communication skills. Various types of literature are used as the springboard for these skills. Our classes will also focus on phonics, whole word recognition, contextual clues and verb conjunction. The specific reading skills K-2 students will develop are:

Recognizing beginning and final consonants in words.

bullet

Recognizing common consonant blends and vowel combinations.

bullet

Identifying long and short vowels.

The reading is blended into various selections of literature. The specific types of comprehension exercises emphasized in both oral and silent reading are:

Describing or explaining the context from pictures.

bullet

Using sentences to explain the context of the story.

bullet

Reading easily with good comprehension and fluency.

bullet

Writing concisely and creatively.

Students will also be required to write in their journal daily.

                Our students analyze and solve word problems. They practice problem solving strategies with problems which require more than one step. Our students will also begin training with various hands on experiences and gradually approach logical, abstract concepts. Numbers, geometry, measurements, probability and statistics help to develop the following specific skills:

Naming and comparing fractions, identifying fractions as part of a whole.

bullet

understanding the concepts of decimals using money.

bullet

Mastering addition and subtraction of larger numerals.

bullet

Working with probability and the concept of chance.

Does your child get an allowance.? Try giving her a wallet and a piggy bank, too. She can keep her spending money in the wallet and put the rest in her bank. As an incentive to save, you might give your youngster a little "interest" on the amount in her bank each month.
