Dear Families,

Your child will be learning many new important skills this year. The suggestions below will help your child.

bullet

Help your child develop a love of reading by reading aloud. reading aloud is valuable even when students can read on their own.

bullet

Help your child get a library card. Encourage your child to set aside a time for reading each day.

bullet

Establish a "home office" for your child where he/she can do homework. Perhaps you can supply some office supplies like paper, pencils, pencil sharpener, erasers, and so on.

bullet

Establish a container or a place where your child puts all the items that must be taken to school. This helps children to be better organized.

bullet

Ask your child to tell you about the schoolwork he/she brings home. Take time to look through schoolwork with your child.

We are partners in your child's learning. Helping your child learn is important and fun for everyone!

The following procedures & policies are those that we would like followed in regard to the first grade homework assignments this year:

1. Homework is sent home on a nightly basis. The subject areas will be: Phonics, Math and Reading. It will be your child's responsibility to return these assignments to school the following morning.

2. It is all right to explain or help your child with any of the pages, if needed.

3. Each week a list of vocabulary words from the stories we have read will be sent home. After your child reads the list of reading words to you, don't forget to sign at the bottom.

4. You will need to have pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue at home to use for homework assignments.

5. All answers should be written with a pencil, not a pen or marker.

If you have any question or concerns, you can call the school at 587-6800. Thank you for your cooperation.

Accelerated Reader Program

We will be participating in the Accelerated Reading Program. Each student will check out an AR book during our library time. Your child will have this book for one week. The book may be read to you and/or you may read the book to your child. Your child will take a test using the computer to check for comprehension of the story. Based on the results of this test, your child will be awarded points for his/her book. Most of the books read in first grade are worth 1/2 point.

The following is the point system used for first grade:

1 point-star and a bookmark

2 points-star and a blow pop sucker

3 points-star and a Ridgeview pencil

4 points-star and a Ridgeview bumper sticker

5 points- star and a Ram Reader button

6 points-star and a free popcorn certificate

7 points-star and library treasure chest

8 points-star and a blow pop sucker

9 points-star and a free popcorn certificate

10 points-star and d Grand prize

After each test, your child will receive an Accelerated Reader report. Review this report with your child. It will show what your child scored on the current test, the average of the book he/she is reading, current points earned, and total points earned. Offer praise and encouragement as you look over this with your child. We will be doing the same in class.

The Village Library also has Accelerated Reading books you and your child can check out. If your child reads a book from the Village Library, write down the name of the book and send it to school with your child. Be sure to tell your child to give the note to his/her teacher so that they can take a test over the book.

Thank you for your continuing help.
