Academic Enrichment Grant
In 2007, Linwood
Elementary School’s Fine Arts Department was awarded $8,800 for “Arts Beyond
the Classroom”. This grant was written by Mr. Jack Mitchell, music teacher
and Ms. Tam Nguyen, visual art teacher, to fund extracurricular programs
before and after school to enrich student’s academic success. Being an A+
(arts integrated) school, the arts are a whole school approach to reach all
students to become successful. The grant provides for several art programs
that include: drum team, hip-hoppers dance group, band, honor choir, and art
club. These programs take the students “beyond” the classroom to tap into
their creative thinking skills, which will take them further in academics
and in life. Research shows that students, who are involved in school, are
more eager to succeed and become life-long learners. Since 2007, the Fine
Arts Department has participated in over 50 citywide and local events and
activities involving students in these programs.
“Arts Beyond the
Classroom” has been funded again for our second year of the grant for $8,800
to continue reaching more students to become successful thinkers. We are
planning on another great year and building partnerships with the community
to promote our goals.
