School History

Our building was first opened as Capitol Hill Junior High School, grades seven, eight and nine, on September 12, 1921, with an attendance of 738 students.  Later, high school students who were to attend Capitol Hill High School (under construction) attended Capitol Hill Junior High School until the high school was completed in 1929.  Our building remained a junior high school, until 1972.  Capitol Hill Middle School was the name of this building during the school years 1972-73 through 1984-85.  At that time, grades six, seven and eight were the middle school grades.  In 1985, our building became Capitol Hill Fifth Year Center and remained a fifth year center until 1993.  We then became Capitol Hill Elementary, grades pre-kindergarten through five.  In August 2000, we added sixth grade classes.  This school year, we have 986 elementary students.  This building has been the only school in the OKCPS system that has housed every grade during its existence.
