OKCPS Language Arts The Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) set forth the basic skills for Oklahoma students. These skills are meant to be used by educators in developing language arts curriculum appropriate to the needs of their students.
There are several English/Language Arts sections in the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), Form M: Grade 6 The Oklahoma PASS provides learning goals for language arts that students must meet by the end of sixth grade. |

4.1 Spelling: Misspelled/Homonyms
The learner will be able to distinguish correct spelling of commonly misspelled words and homonyms.

The learner will be able to use appropriate essay test-taking and time-writing strategies that address and analyze the question (prompt) and use organizational methods required by the prompt.

The learner will be able to write friendly letters and business letters, and continue to produce other writing forms introduced in earlier grades.

The learner will be able to determine the appropriateness of an information source for a research topic.

| The Language Mechanics Unit includes comprehending and applying the rules that govern punctuation and capitalization when writing and editing written works. |

9.1 Punctuate: Correctly/Writing
The learner will be able to punctuate correctly in writing (e.g., end punctuation, commas to separate words in a series, city and state, quotation, and sentence and to set off nonrestrictive phrases, quotation marks, apostrophes in contractions and possessives, and conventions of letter writing).

The learner will be able to write descriptions, explanations, comparison and contrast papers, and problems and solution papers that state the thesis (position on the topic) or purpose, explain the situation, organize the composition clearly and appropriately for the purpose of the writing, and provide evidence to support arguments and conclusions.

The learner will be able to write persuasive compositions that state a clear position on a proposition or proposal.

14.3 Writing as a Process: Composition
The learner will be able to use the writing process to develop composition skills. Students are expected to use prewriting strategies, write and revise multiple drafts, edit, and share their compositions.

The learner will be able to write for different purposes and to a specific audience or person, adjusting tone and style as necessary to make writing interesting.

The learner will be able to compose a presentation with a well-organized introduction, body, and conclusion that is appropriate for different purposes, audiences, and occasions.

The learner will be able to write narratives that establish and develop a plot and setting, and present a point of view that is appropriate to the stories, include sensory details and clear language to develop plot and character, and use a range of narrative devices, such as dialogue or suspense.
