Volunteer Opportunities

Nichols Hills Elementary School has a fantastic and energized group of volunteers who help out in many aspects of school life. From beautifying the school grounds to helping out teachers in numerous ways to participating in fund-raising activities, there are volunteer opportunities to fit anyone’s talents and schedule.

There are over twenty committees that address the needs of the school. Check the front of the current school directory for the list of committees and chairmen, and contact them if you would like to get involved, or for more information.

Besides serving on the various committees, there are many other ways to help the school out on a regular basis. Below is a summary of some of the ways that your help is needed. If you see a place where you might fit in, give the appropriate contact person a call and we can find you something that fits your schedule.

Please consider helping out in all the areas that are appealing to you!

Can you spare thirty minutes a week to help a child? Consider becoming a tutor. After the teachers identify students who need some extra help, tutors meet with the students during the school day, once a week. The meeting time can be chosen to suit your schedule, and it’s a great way to make a difference in that student’s life…and to help the teacher who is trying to keep the student caught up with the class.

To sign up to be a tutor, or for more information, call Helen Gaudin – 525-5738.

Teachers Need Extra Help!

With no teachers’ assistants at the school, some teachers will be asking for help inside and outside the classroom. After the teachers assess their needs, we will contact volunteers and try to meet those needs.

To sign up, call Helen Gaudin – 525-5738.

“Can-Call” List

Occasionally, the school needs help with one-time activities (such as assisting school nurse with screenings, assisting with kindergarten testing, or filling in for a teacher while she attends a meeting). Would you like to be called when these needs arise?

To put your name on the “Can Call” list, call

Cathy Mettenbrink – 521-0646.

Playground Volunteers

Volunteer to spend one or two lunchtimes (approx. 11:15-12:30) per month to increase the number of supervising adults on our playground at recess. This is a fun, but very important, way to volunteer your time. Help keep the playground a safe environment for our kids!

To sign up, or for more information, call Sue Bond –525-2925.

Dads As Volunteers (DAVs)

This is an active group of dads working to raise money in fun ways and to make improvements to the school grounds.

For more information, call Chris Moler – 749-1953.
